Life and writing

Jane Austen (1775–1817) wrote six major novels that examine social relationships through individual situations and contrasting perspectives. The museum’s account highlights irony and free indirect style, in which a reader encounters a character’s perspective within narration. This makes the distinction between novelist, narrator and speaker important. A memorable line can reveal a character’s limits rather than offer a rule the author asks everyone to follow.

Jane Austen’s House — Jane Austen ↗ Museum overview: lifetime, six novels, irony and free indirect style

In the linked 1894 Pride and Prejudice, Darcy’s declaration and subsequent letter lead into Elizabeth’s reconsideration of what she believed. Read Chapters XXXIV–XXXVI as a sequence: an immediate reaction, a new account and an attempt to compare it with remembered conduct. The selected supplied passages concern a declaration and self-questioning. Keeping the scene around such words gives the reader more to examine than an isolated sentence.
