Deeper explanation and when to use it
The proverb reflects how an ending can change our feelings about what came before it. A journey full of delays may be remembered fondly if it ends in a joyful reunion. That does not mean the difficulties were unreal or that a good result justifies every method used to obtain it. Harm, avoidable risk and unfairness may still deserve attention even when the final outcome is welcome. The saying is most helpful as a relieved response to a problem that has turned out acceptably, rather than a complete moral judgement about the whole process.
