Courtesy on one side never lasts long.

Courtesy on one side never lasts long.
Traditional · English

Meaning in plain English

Courtesy may be difficult to sustain when it is consistently met with disregard. The one-sided exchange highlights reciprocity, without requiring politeness to become a bargain or blaming someone for setting a necessary boundary.

Example

A group member who repeatedly receives abrupt replies raises the pattern calmly and asks that scheduling disagreements be discussed without personal remarks.

Deeper explanation and when to use it

The saying imagines considerate treatment travelling in only one direction. Over time, the person offering it may be less willing to continue the same exchange. Its useful concern is whether people recognise and respect one another, rather than whether every gesture receives an immediate return. A delayed or different response may reflect circumstances the speaker does not know. Courtesy can also include a firm refusal or clear limit. The proverb does not make kindness worthless unless it is repaid, nor does it excuse retaliation. It can prompt discussion of an uneven pattern and a more workable way of communicating.

When to use it

Use it when a repeated lack of consideration is weakening an ongoing exchange.

Keep in mind

Courtesy is not a debt to repay gesture for gesture; consider circumstances and respect clear boundaries.
