A person may hear their own expectations in an ambiguous signal. Check whether an interpretation comes from the evidence or from what you already want to believe.

What the words are saying

The bell’s sound is imagined as agreeing with the fool’s thoughts. The chinking supplies an ambiguous noise onto which a listener places a preferred meaning. Figuratively, a vague remark or uncertain event can seem to confirm an expectation because the observer supplies much of the interpretation. The saying challenges that confidence rather than proving the interpretation false. Ask what was actually heard or observed and what further information could distinguish plausible readings. A firmly held expectation may be correct, but it should not count as evidence for itself merely because an unclear signal can be made to fit it.
