Experience is a dear school, but it is the only one we are apt to learn in.

Meaning in plain English

Learning through your own mistakes can be costly, yet people often take a lesson seriously only after experiencing its consequences. Consider whether you could learn earlier from advice or another person’s experience.

What the words are saying

Dear describes the cost of this imagined school: its fees are the trouble or loss involved in making a mistake. The proverb criticises a tendency to overlook guidance until the consequences become personal. The phrase the only one is deliberately forceful, not proof that people cannot learn through teaching, observation or reflection. Nor does experiencing difficulty automatically produce understanding. A lesson still needs to be recognised and applied. The useful question is whether a warning offers relevant evidence now, and whether a careful test or discussion could avoid paying for the same discovery through a preventable setback.

Everyday example

After overlooking a checklist causes missing materials at an event, a team reviews which earlier instructions could have helped and uses them for the next session.

When to use it

Use it when a preventable mistake reveals advice that had previously been ignored.

What it does not mean

Experience is not the only way to learn, and hardship does not automatically make someone wiser.
