Meaning in plain English
Considerate words can calm an overheated exchange. Acknowledgement and clear, respectful language may reduce tension enough for people to address what actually needs to happen.
What the words are saying
Cooling is figurative: the proverb compares an angry or distressed interaction with heat. Good words are words suited to easing that tension, such as recognising a concern, giving an honest explanation or proposing a workable next step. The saying does not promise that politeness will resolve every conflict. Empty reassurance, patronising language or a request to calm down can make matters worse. The useful response attends to the actual concern and follows through where action is needed. Words help most when they communicate respect and substance rather than merely making the speaker sound reasonable.
Everyday example
A staff member acknowledges a visitor’s frustration about a cancelled booking, explains the available alternatives and lets them choose instead of arguing about their tone.
When to use it
Use it when respectful acknowledgement and useful information could reduce ordinary tension.
What it does not mean
Calming language should not minimise a real grievance or replace necessary action and boundaries.
