Let not the fiddler play the fife, Nor fifer play the fiddle.

Let not the fiddler play the fife, Nor fifer play the fiddle.

Meaning in plain English

Different tasks may call for different skills, even when they appear closely related. The fiddler and fifer picture that distinction, while leaving room for people to learn another task or demonstrate competence in both.

What the words are saying

The proverb assigns each musician the instrument associated with their role. Figuratively, it warns against assuming that experience in one activity automatically supplies the skills needed for another. A useful arrangement checks the particular task, the person’s demonstrated ability and any preparation or support required. Roles should not become permanent barriers: someone can learn a second skill, and a title may not reflect everything they can do. The comparison is therefore most useful when it prompts a clear assessment before assigning work. It should not dismiss a willing learner or protect a role from a competent newcomer simply because they began elsewhere.

Everyday example

A good newsletter editor volunteers to repair a display stand; the group checks what practical skills and tools are needed before agreeing the job.

When to use it

Use it when related roles are being treated as interchangeable without checking the task.

What it does not mean

People can develop several skills; assess ability and support rather than relying only on a job title.
