The great Homer himself sometimes nods.

The great Homer himself sometimes nods.

Historical period not yet established

Meaning in plain English

Even a highly respected or capable person can make a mistake. The nodding image makes room for lapses without dismissing the person’s wider achievement or making every error unimportant.

What the words are saying

The great Homer is the proverb’s example of someone held in high regard, while nodding suggests a moment when attention or performance falters. The contrast challenges the expectation that excellence must be flawless. Applied to ordinary work, a lapse need not erase the value of what a person has done well. Nor does reputation make the mistake harmless or excuse leaving it uncorrected. The useful response identifies the particular problem, considers its effect and allows for correction without turning one lapse into a verdict on the whole person. Respect and accountability can remain part of the same response.

Everyday example

An experienced illustrator notices that a label in a finished diagram is reversed, corrects it and explains the change without treating the error as proof that the whole drawing lacks value.

When to use it

Use it when a respected person’s particular mistake is being treated as a complete failure.

What it does not mean

Reputation does not remove responsibility to correct an error or address its effects.
