The years stand for living through situations, and books stand for learning through written accounts. The proverb favours the knowledge gained by encountering consequences and changing circumstances directly. Its comparison is deliberately broad rather than a reliable ranking of every older person against every reader. Experience may be narrow or misunderstood, while a good account can make other people’s experience available. The useful lesson is to connect reading with observation and reflection. Neither the number of years lived nor the number of pages read should settle a question without considering how relevant and well examined the knowledge actually is.
